Using Artificial Fertilisers In Organic Lawn Care

The principles of organic lawn care involve replacing artificial lawn treatments and lawn care with more natural methods, and thereby reducing the environmental impacts of our lawns. However the only downside to organic lawn care in these early stages is that they are often still not as effective as more traditional methods.

Lawn feeding, nourishment and fertilising is a prime example of these principles, where organic fertiliser products can provide many benefits, including feeding the lawn with natural organisms, minerals and vitamins that traditional fertilisers cannot do, but still fall short in supplying major nutrients to our lawns.

It's at these times that we must find a balance between organic and traditional lawn care.

Supplementing Nutrients With Traditional Fertilisers

Following our organic lawn care principles, we only want to supplement our lawns with artificial fertilisers when absolutely necessary, and only ever in addition to our standard organic lawn fertilising practices.

There are several ways to achieve this outcome.

Apply Artificial Fertilisers Once or Twice Per Year

Adding artificial fertilisers one or twice each year will greatly reduce our dependence on these products, and this is most certainly a good starting point in our organic lawn care practices by only adding the smallest amount of artificial fertilisers as needed.

The only problem with this option is that our lawns require balanced nourishment year round, and not just once or twice per year. So by following this method, our lawns are deprived of some important nourishment for the most part of the year.

Apply Fertilisers In Smaller Quantities

Now here is a much better solution in our organic lawn care.

Apply the artificial fertiliser more often throughout the year, but in much smaller quantities.

That way our lawns are receiving all the nutrients they need throughout the year, while using no more fertiliser than the previous method, and using substantially less fertiliser than traditional lawn care which relies on chemical fertilisers alone.

This is both incredibly beneficial to our lawns and the environment.

How To Supplement Lawn Feeding With Artificial Fertilisers

With this method, we simply reduce the amount of fertiliser being applied to the lawn to one quarter to one half of recommended application rates for the fertiliser, and then apply it once at the beginning of each season change.

For example, if the lawn fertiliser product recommends an application rate of 50 grams of fertiliser per square metre, we simply reduce that amount to between 12 - 25 grams of fertiliser per square metre of lawn.

Using this method also wastes no excess fertiliser into the environment, as the lawn will take up all of the small amounts of fertiliser being applied.

This method will also use around 75% less fertiliser than a lawn which relies on traditional lawn fertilisers alone.

And Remember: always try to buy fertilisers from local manufacturers to reduce pollution from excessive long distance product haulage and to ensure you're using the best fertiliser which has been formulated for your regions soil type.
